Re: Top Tips Topic
This Top Tip really belongs in the Luxury Top Tips secion, but there isn't one:
When your car gets stuck, or you need to push it, don't stand behind it and push the body.
Instead, push the top of the wheels forward. This gives you double the mechanical advantage and only requires half the effort.
This is a true Top Tip and not a load of rubbish like the others.

Re: Top Tips Topic
I have of a very interesting mystery following on from my excellent Top Tip:
When a vehicle moves along, the top of the wheels goes twice as fast as the vehicle.
So why don't the tops of the wheels arrive there in half the time?
This is a mystery which has puzzled mankind ever since the wheel was invented, and I don't expect you dumb members to be able to solve it.

Re: Top Tips Topic
Because the speed of the top of the wheel is relative to the speed of the vehicle. Take one from the other and you'll discover that in real terms it's only going at the same speed as the vehicle, but in the opposite direction.
Similarly, the bottom of the wheel travels in the opposite direction at twice the speed of the vehicle, relatively.

This is completely wrong.Runaway wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 2:38 pmBecause the speed of the top of the wheel is relative to the speed of the vehicle. Take one from the other and you'll discover that in real terms it's only going at the same speed as the vehicle, but in the opposite direction.

The top of the wheel doesn't go in the opposite direction to the vehicle.
And the bottom of the wheel doesn't go in the opposite direction at twice the speed of the vehicle. The bottom of the wheel is stationary.
Just how wrong can you gett*en - Mr Run*away?

If the bottom of the wheel is stationary, the car can't be moving.
And if it IS moving, then every point on the wheel is also stationary (instantaneously).

Re: Top Tips Topic
The wheel is only fixed to the car at one articulated point. So it is quite possible for one to be stationary and the other to be moving.
This is complete nonsense (instantaneously). And if it IS moving, then every point on the wheel is also stationary (instantaneously).

Relative to the car, yes. But not relative to the plane of movement.Sir William wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 2:55 pm

In a moving car, the top of the wheel moves at twice the speed of the car for a moment, relative to the ground. And the bottom of the wheel is stationery.
The centre of the wheel moves at the speed of the car.
So from top to bottom it's: 2 1 0

But you said that the bottom of the wheel travels in the opposite direction at twice the speed of the vehicle.
I will reveal the correct answer when all the other members have of had a go.

Look, it's obvious. The front of the car gets to its destination before the back of the car, so it MUST be going faster.

Save petrol (and money) by removing the cover from your petrol gauge and taping the needle at 'Full'.
I did this 8 months ago and my petrol tank is still full.
