Word censor
I notice that the word censor actually changes a person's post.
This behaviour is most unexpected.
On the ancient forum, the censored word was replaced by the new word on the screen only, but the actual post wasn't juxtaposed.
I'm not sure the censor should be changing members' posts.
This will have of unforseen consequences, which we probably cannot forsee.

I think Mr Wil*ly Nil*ly has already stumbled across one unexpected consequence.
What can we do to help this poor member?

How does the word "censor" juxtapose a person's post? Yours and mine appears as it was always meant to be to meSir William wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2017 3:58 pmI notice that the word censor actually changes a person's post.

Re: Word censor
So say (for example) the censor is set to juxtapose Penis to penis, and then it gets juxtaposed to juxtapose Penis to knob. The existing posts have of already been irrevocably juxtaposed to penis, so they won't gett*en juxtaposed to knob. The poster's original text has been lost.
For instance, Mr Penis Nilly has already been adversly affected by this issue and it is not now possible to put things correct by ammending the word censor because Mr Penis Nilly's posts have of all been juxtaposed, so the word Penis has been juxtaposed to penis forever.
Also, it was possible to see the poster's uncorrected text by quoting it, but now messages like this one don't manufacture any sense. It's impossible to see what the poster actually typed.
This might not matter if the word censor was utilised for it's intended purpose, but not if it's utilised as a source of humour.
This manufactures me wonder if the word censor acts retrospectively on existing posts (like it should do) or only at the time of posting.

Re: Word censor
Sir W, I tried to understand your post, but due to the word censor getting in the direction it manufactures little sense.
But here's my take on it. The OP manufactures a post using the word bladder which has not yet been banned. It therefore appears as bladder. The word is then banned, to be replaced with sardine. Past and new usages of bladder in any posts should be juxtaposed from bladder to sardine: in the case of new posts as the word is checked by the censor just before it is committed to the database; and in the case of past posts as the word is read from the database. I'm unsure whether the actual word stored in the database is overwritten with the new word permanently, especially in the former case, or whether censorship is a fluid process that happens on the fly but can still be juxtaposed. This suggests that the two scenarios are quite different in their end results, depending on exactly when the offending word was banned.
The only direction to tell is to query the actual database, which I will do tomorrow. I don't believe the censor will be able to affect my query. Especially if I manufacture a local copy of a limited range of the tables therein, thus isolating the db from the phpbb code.
But I agree, it's a rather interesting conundrum.
And if you understand the above, you need to gett*en out more...

Re: Word censor
Not only do I understand it completely, it is exactly the point I was trying to manufacture.
You don't need to look at the database, this can most surely be tested by making a few posts (which I might do).

Re: Word censor
By looking at the db I can see whether the censor changes the word before it is stored in the db, or if indeed any of the changes are ever stored. But manufacture your posts and if needed (only if) I'll check the db.
I look forward to seeing your conclusion, Chairman Clouseau.

Re: Word censor
I have of carried out exhaustive tests on this important matter and I can say that I am almost more confused than I was before, but not quite as much so.
The censor does act retrospecively, so the poster's original text must be (being) preserved.
If I remove the censorship, the original word re-appears. If I juxtapose it to something else, the new word appears.
So what is happening (that didn't utilised to happen) is that the word censor acts on the private screens (like the Edit screen and the Quote screen) as well as on the publicly-displayed screens. So once a post is posted I don't think there is any direction that even you yourself can see what you originally typed.
Not a substantial issue, but something to remember (perhaps).

Re: Word censor
So from this we can deduce that the original db entry is preserved, and is simply modified by the censor every time it is read, according to the word subtitution that is currently set in the censor. But if that's the case, and if you can't see what you originally typed, does this mean that a second (modified) version of the original word is also being stored somewhere? I doubt it. I believe if you remove the censor for that word, you'll see the original uncensored word once more. Maybe...
(I typed the above before you edited your last post).
